Paintings of old masters is a field which requires a large amount of “connoisseurship”, or the skill to judge various levels of quality, to recognise the time and place a painting was created and possibly the author of the artwork.
Collecting old master paintings, and also nineteenth century paintings and works of art as sculpture and some categories of furniture is not only an economic investment. It is also a way to learn and to open new fields of knowledge and culture, and involves not only art history, but also literature, history and reflects on the modern world.
Starting with this one needs to be critical and open for new ideas, proceeding one may develop a personal taste and interest, independently of fashion and common trends.
