Master of the Fiesole Adoration, Florence, end of the 15th century
One of those still anonymous artists, but with a increasingly better defined oeuvre, working in the style dominated by Sandro Botticelli, but producing works with an appeal for more conservative oriented clients. Florence in these years had an intense artistic life with many competing workshops which also exchanged drawings, compositions and pupils. There was a large demand for devotional works and the Master of the Fiesole Adoration worked with such an atelier. Perhaps because such artists where slightly off the dominating artistic track they got less important or highly visible jobs by churches and monasteries, which delays the possible surfacing of documents which may reveal their name. On the general question there is a still very useful catalogue: Maestri e botteghe. Pittura a Firenze alla fine del Quattrocento. Firenze, Palazzo Strozzi, 16/10-10/1/1993, edited by M.Gregori, A.Paolucci, C.Acidini Luchinat.
