Pier Francesco Guala (Casale Monferrato 1698 – Milan 1757)

Guala painted mainly religious subjects, for public spaces as churches but also for private devotion. Sometimes these paintings reflect a very personal and highly typical sense of drama, and interesting and original compositions. But his most prominent side was that of the portraitist, in his best works achieving a psychological penetration similar to that of Fra Galgario. Guala has a broad and characteristic pencil stroke, with warm, dark local colours. His paint style does not seem, at a first glance, very precise, but he is, even with rapid strokes, able to evoke efficiently the details.

His religious subjects, if not particularly original or intense, have a relatively modest market and may be worth between 15 000 and 30 000 Euro. However, if, as not infrequently happens, the paintings are particularly original they may be worth considerably more. His portraits are worth around € 30 000, but also these, in special and not rare cases, may fetch quite a lot more.
The (also economically) qualifying element in his work, religious or profane, is the psychological penetration in the faces of his subjects, portraits or saints.
