This painting, rather than being a portrait was probably intended to be a study of a character or a state of mind. Such may have appealed to the literary circle of the Accademia degli Incogniti guided by Giovan Francesco Loredan, a circle that Pietro Della Vecchia surely frequented (about this: Bernard Aikema, Pietro della Vecchia and the heritage of the renaissance in Venice, Firenze 1990, pp. 68, 69
